Drupal Stuff

As host and co-organizer of TEDxSantoDomingo, the local independently organized TED event at Santo Domingo going into its 2nd edition and year next June, one of my rules is to coordinate word of mouth, web and social media support for it.

Of course, the first thing to do was to create a Twitter account and hashtag, a Facebook group (should have created a page perhaps?) and a website. The website is powered by Drupal, probably the most flexible, powerful and extensible open source content management and social platforma available today. Drupal is also the platform that powers this blog, the entire Socinfo.com website and most of the interactive spaces in all my other on-line projects since 2005.

Instead of coding the theme from zero for the layout and style of the webs, I chose a theme which included the functionality required by my specifications and aspirations for the website and hacked it to achieve a very red TED look and feel.

La opción más común y frecuente para proteger el servidor es usar iptables. Sin embargo, sus reglas pueden resultar confusas para muchos usuarios e innecesariamente detalladas para una configuración básica de servidor web, acceso ftp y shell y base de datos MySQL.

Uncomplicated Firewall (UFW) es una alternativa más simple de instalar, configurar y administrar que a la vez sirve de interfaz para iptables.

Para instalar Uncomplicated Firewall (UFW), indicar en la ventana shell del servidor:

sudo apt-get install ufw

Para "abrir" o permitir acceso al puerto shell 12345, el puerto 80 (web), el puerto 443 (web seguro o https), el puerto 21 (ftp) y el puerto 3306 (MySQL), escribimos:

Poder acceder a nuestros servidores y administrarlos en forma remota desde cualquier lugar a través del shell es una gran ventaja, pero esto implica potenciales riesgos de seguridad e invita ataques de ciber-piratas que intentarán descifrar dicho acceso.

Tres medidas preventivas básicas reducen el riesgo y nos protegen de los ataques de ciber-piratas y robots malintencionados que buscan penetrar en nuestro sistema:

La seguridad de un servidor y los controles de acceso al mismo son temas de vital importancia que no deben subestimarse, postergarse o tratados en forma genérica. Si bien cada servidor e instalación es única, hay varias simples medidas que podemos tomar para hacer que nuestros servidores sean más seguros y minimizar el riesgo de ataques de ciber-piratas y reducir la frecuencia y posibilidad de los mismos.

Para poder acceder y configurar servidores remotos (como los que se contratan y albergan en centros de hosting o data centers), la alternativa más flexible y conveniente es usar un cliente de acceso al shell de los servidores.

Putty en Windows 7Los usuarios de Linux y Mac pueden seguir las instrucciones acá presentadas usando la aplicación Terminal (que se encuentra en el menú de Accesorios), mientras que los usuarios de Windows necesitarán una aplicación como el excelente cliente gratuito Putty para realizarlas.

I have completed the translation to Spanish of the Private message v5.x-1.8 module and related files and modules (privatemsg.info, mail_edit.module, mail_edit.info).

The current es.po translation file included with the module is quite old and inaccurate, which generates plenty of confusion when used.

This is just a little reminder to keep track of convenient changes I make to Drupal and the modules I'm using in my sites to make them work the way I want.

In 4.7.2, the changes are as follows:

- Aggregator module: Several changes to make the links open in a new page.

- URL filter: Change to make the links open in a new page.

- Organic Groups: Change to list the group description and remove the "create content" links from the Group Details block.
