The Role of Social Entrepreneurship in Sustainable Development

By Carlos Miranda Levy - Posted on 20 January 2007

Given enabling environments for social entrepreneurship, both individuals and institutions will have similar incentives (beyond their social motivation) to innovate, explore, pursue and develop solutions, goods and services for their local communities and global markets.

In addition, a social entrepreneur has the incentive to continuously improve its offerings in order to compete in the market. Finally, the good will nature of social entrepreneurship tends to generate a more socially oriented use of profits and resources and to enable collaborative and participative processes with the community, rather than dissociative or conflicting relations with it.

The map below illustrates a conducive environment for promoting entrepreneurial initiatives and spirit at the local level by engaging relevant stakeholders and providing adequate support with ICT, beyond microcredit or financing.

Money is not enough to promote and support entrepreneurial activity. Know-how, experience, administrative skills, marketing skills are all part of the picture and can only be attained by engaging multiple stakeholders.
